How to Write Your Life Stories Memoirs that People Want to Read Steve Boga 9781441564412 Books
I devoured this book, wrote all over it, yellow-lined, pencil marked, dog-eared the pages, tore pages out, did everything but eat the pages. In this book Steve Boga preaches clarity, brevity, simplicity and humanity and follows his own rule. Then he teaches, showing me step by step. He straightens out my grammar, spelling, sense of purpose, my reading, mental health, and my sense of fun in the doing. The list of suggested reading is extensive. Thank God I've read at least half, else I'd never get back to writing. Steve Boga tells me the how and the why of how, so I have a measure of my reason for undertaking memoir as I discover myself. It is wonderful that he shows me how to strip a sentence to its essence, discarding extemporaneous words, sending me flying to my memoir to, well, strip it without diluting it.
He directs me through the knotty problems of choosing editor, agent, publisher, then sorts it for me. This book is a complete directive from start (putting pen to paper), to finish (to determine why I'm driven to write this thing in the first place.) Glossary and resources round out the full-scale assistance. Buy this practical book and stop guessing!

How to Write Your Life Stories Memoirs that People Want to Read Steve Boga 9781441564412 Books Reviews
I have struggled for years with writing memoir, unable to get to the heart of what I wanted the reader to know. Steve Boga has clarified memoir for me, made it more manageable. I see it now as a series of short stories, small episodes of interest that relate to our lives.
This takes the boredom out of a narrative that just tells and doesn't show how the author has been affected by relatives, friends, and life events. Write your stories as they come to you, Boga says, put them together later, and one day you have a memoir of yourself and others in action.
Boga offers wonderful tips for making your writing more interesting, but also advice on books to read, grammar do's and don'ts, journaling, and much more. We get examples of other memoirist's stories and insightful quotes from famous authors. This book takes the intimidation out of writing, gives hope to the novice, and encourages the writer to use all six senses.
Life stories, not life story. Rarely do we want to read about a person's entire life. But the gems of life, the bits that shine and teach and inspire understanding, unique to your experience - those are the important stories.
I've read a few books on the art of writing, memoir included, and found value in all of them. This book is different. It has all the how-to elements; but more importantly, Boga's love for teaching and his passion for the memoir shine through.
You'll find practical tips like "creating a workspace, making time to write, keeping a journal, revising, grammar, maintaining your momentum, how to publish, quotes from other writers, and some actual memoir stories. There is even a list of recommended reading.
The best thing you'll find, however, is inspiration - the realization of the importance of writing memoir - for you, for your family, for your sanity. Regardless of what happens to your work after it's completed, Boga illustrates how memoir writing is therapy.
So you want to write your history?
People tell you you've had an interesting life, or you know you've had one.
But, you're not sure how to begin.
You're in luck. Writer Steve Boga has been teaching memoir writing for more than a decade and his book. "How to Write Your Life Stories Memoirs That People Want to Read," is an easy-to-follow, comprehensive and well-written guide to what you need to know. It's also accessible and funny.
Boga - who has clearly never written a stuffy line in his life - maintains everyone has a story, and all of them can be interesting.
You don't have to be writing for publication to benefit from this book if you simply want to leave an entertaining record of your life what it was like to grow up in the lively decades this country has seen, the book is equally useful.
Chapters are short and pithy. There are examples and exercises. And, if you are considering publication, that information is included.
It's a one-stop shop learning how to show, instead of tell; how to move the reader emotionally; take him or her into your story; how to write lean, clean, fresh prose.
Writing is one of the most enjoyable things you can do with your clothes on. As a former journalist, I know the thrill of a well-written story. The glow can stay with you for days. You are proud because you've done the best you could and what you created was good enough to satisfy you - your severest critic.
No one knows your life, thoughts, feelings, emotions and events, better than you. With Boga's help, you can put that on paper in a compulsively readable manner.
Take the time. Develop a new addiction - a good one, examining who you are and where you've been - and offer it to those who are interested.
How to Write Your Life Stories is engaging, instructive and inspiring. After reading this book, I'm excited to begin writing some of mine.
Writing sounds easy until you start to do it. Once ready Steve's book, I was able to write a lot better and the task became far easier than I ever knew.
I am a reader, writer and teacher of memoir. I am always looking for new resources and new ideas for my students. This book is marvelous. The chapters are short and to the point. It has a wonderful table of contents ,good examples of memoir, list of other resources and even a nice list of quotes about writing memoir. As one professional to another, I say "Well done, Steve Boga."
